The Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) alerted these entities that their personnel accounts or credentials were being traded on dark and underground web marketplaces.
This affected 808 out of the center's total membership of 6,116 K-12 members.
Threat actors are leveraging these compromised logins to gain initial access and subsequently move laterally to adjacent districts.
MS-ISAC documented instances where an adversary would phish one valid district account and then utilize it to propagate further.
The initial report detailing this pattern, titled "Stolen staff logins are spreading attacks between K-12 school districts," was first published on Help Net Security.
This pattern of credential misuse highlights systemic vulnerabilities within distributed educational infrastructures.
The reliance on staff credentials as a primary vector underscores the critical need for robust identity and access management across these platforms.
